General Anesthesia in a Hospital Setting

For some children, our pediatric dentists may recommend completing dental treatment under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. This recommendation is based on your child’s individual needs and may take into consideration their age and developmental level, medical history, dental treatment needs, level of anxiety, or other factors that may make a hospital setting the most appropriate option for their care.

Under general anesthesia, your child is fully asleep while necessary dental treatment is completed, allowing our pediatric dentists to provide their care safely and comfortably.

Benefits of Hospital General Anesthesia

A hospital setting provides access to additional medical resources and support for children who may benefit from this level of care. Benefits include:

  • When a hospital environment may be better suited for your child's needs
  • Access to additional medical resources when needed or collaboration of medical teams under one general anesthesia event

If hospital general anesthesia is recommended, our hospital coordinator will guide your family through the process, including scheduling, insurance information, pre-operative requirements, and what to expect on the day of treatment.

Our pediatric dentists provide hospital dental care at Children’s Minnesota – Minneapolis and Children’s Minnesota – Minnetonka.

Your child’s pediatric dentist will discuss why a hospital setting is being recommended and answer any questions you may have so you can feel comfortable and informed about your child’s care.
